The National Emergency Management Stockpile (NEMS) is growing. We've recently added three large electricity generators, able to support a range of emergencies.

In an emergency, places like hospitals, supermarkets and evacuation centres need to continue running. The new 850kVA generators and 500kVA generator can help restore power to these venues.

Generating more resilient communities

The NEMS Capability was established to improve Australia's ability to respond to disasters.

The 2024 Budget committed $27 million over three years to grow the NEMS Capability.

“The Stockpile enables us to respond faster to requests for Commonwealth assistance, making those difficult times a little bit easier for Australian communities,” said Bron Sparkes, Director of the NEMS.

Access to a stockpile of goods and services

The Stockpile will include a mix of goods and services, such as:

  • emergency shelter camps
  • water desalination and purification systems
  • emergency power generators, and
  • a strategic reserve of disaster management consumables.

We have set up a procurement panel to achieve speedier access to goods and services during emergencies.

The first tranche of the NEMS Panel launched in May 2024. It includes nine suppliers. Most of them are small and medium-sized businesses.

“It's important that we support Australian businesses by giving them the opportunity to be part of the Panel. Their expertise is critical to support our national response,” Mrs Sparkes said.

The generators were purchased from Panel Supplier Anywise. They are an Australian project management firm and Certified-B Corporation that contributes 20 percent of their profits to philanthropic pursuits.
