Preparing Australia Communities Program - local

The Government is helping communities prepare for disasters. It’s funding 158 projects to help Australians cope better with bushfires, floods and cyclones. We are administering these projects.

These projects will make it easier to:

  • plan for disasters
  • teach people about risks
  • build, improve and protect buildings, roads, bridges and natural areas.

The Government wants to help communities:

  • reduce the impact of disasters
  • handle disasters better
  • recover faster after disasters.

Purpose of the program

Climate change is making disasters worse. We need to reduce the damage caused by disasters and make recovery easier and cheaper.

The projects will focus on 4 main areas:

  1. Social environment: helping people work together and keep important services running.
  2. Economic environment: helping local businesses survive disasters.
  3. Built environment: protecting things like roads, houses and power lines.
  4. Natural environment: looking after nature, such as forests and rivers.

Reducing disaster risk was a key focus of the Royal Commission into National Natural Disaster Arrangements.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction Framework has three goals to reach by 2030:

  1. Reduce existing disaster risks
  2. Prevent new risks from forming
  3. Give decision-makers the tools they need to manage risks.
